The Foreign Exchange Market

Spot Retail and Institutional FX

What is it, Who belongs to it, How does one participate?

Foreign Exchange (currency or forex or FX) market exists wherever one currency is traded for another. It is by far the largest financial market in the world, and includes trading between large banks, central banks, currency speculators, multinational corporations, governments, and other financial markets and institutions. The average daily trading of the the global forex markets currently exceeds 2-3 trillion. Retail traders (individuals) are a small fraction of this market and may only participate indirectly through brokers or banks.Spot FX

Currencies are always traded in pairs, for example EUR/USD, USD/JPY. Every position requires the buying of one currency and selling of another:

  • GBP = Great Britain Pound
  • EUR = Euro
  • CHF = Swiss Franc
  • USD = United States Dollar
  • CAD = Canadian Dollar
  • JPY = Japanese Yen
  • AUD = Australian Dollar
  • NZD = New Zealand Dollar

For Example: EURUSD > Euro v US Dollar

Futures Commission Merchants or FCM's, are Liquidity Provider companies engaging in the transfer of currency to foreign banks, are in essence trading on the Forex market When an advisor recommends a currency hedge, they are insuring themselves against a negative event. This doesn't prevent a negative event from happening, but if it does happen and you're properly hedged, the impact of the event is reduced. So, hedging a commodity in its own market or across markets, occurs almost everywhere, and we see it everyday.

The Forex Market

Spot FX Trading

The forex market impacts every financial instrument (bond, equity, property, etc) and any investments accessible to foreign investors. Forex rates play a major role in financing government deficits, equity ownership in companies and real-estate. Foreign exchange trading involves the Buy and Sell of 2 separate currency pairs: the currency in your pocket is literally stock in your country, and like a share, its value fluctuates on the international market providing knowledgeable traders with substantial opportunities for profit or loss.
